New HS ClassesThe Mehlville Board of Education approved new high school courses and revisions to existing high school courses during their Dec. 20 meeting.

Four new courses were approved: AMPED Algebra, AMPED Business Process, Geometry in Construction-Construction and Geometry in Construction-Geometry.

AMPED stands for Algebra in Manufacturing, Production, Entrepreneurship and Design. Both the Algebra and Business Process courses are one-year courses meant to be taken together. These courses provide an Algebra I and Practical Art credit. The courses extend the math learned in earlier grades in an authentic business setting, in this case an advanced fabrication lab that customizes textile products like t-shirts, sweatshirts, blankets, banners or other printed materials.

“21st century business success requires problem solving, critical thinking, creativity and effective collaboration,” said Lindsey Roy, STEM coordinator for Mehlville School District. “Seeing first-hand how the business environment interacts with algebraic concepts enables the student to develop the skills that are desired in today’s workplace.”

The two Geometry in Construction courses are also meant to be taken concurrently. Through hands-on learning experiences and the building of an actual structure, students enrolled in this course will apply geometry concepts to a variety of construction processes in order to see the connection between the two. The student will gain a hands-on understanding of basic construction methods, construction safety, and the variety of tools needed for different construction tasks. Through this course, the student will be exposed to a variety of construction trades and the skills needed to succeed in the construction industry.
