Young patients at St. Louis Children’s Hospital will have some extra games and other gifts for the holidays, thanks to two Trautwein Elementary fifth grade students. Reagan Kirkpatrick and Lilly Burch decided to collect puzzles, games, stuffed animals, blankets and other items for children who will be spending the holiday in the hospital.

“It’s pretty awesome,” explained Trautwein principal Dr. Shannon Henderson. “They planned this whole thing. They made all the flyers that were sent home to parents. They made posters, they make announcements every day, and during lunch time they collect the donated items.”

Reagan and Lilly called Children’s Hospital to get approval for their toy drive, and hospital officials were thrilled. The gifts, all of which must be new, will be given to nurses, who will then give the items to their patients. The girls have collected several large bins full of gifts.

“I just feel like kids in the hospital don’t get to do the things they want to do. They need to have fun,” said Reagan. Lilly added, “We want them to have a better life so we help them out.”

The spirit of giving appears to be contagious at Trautwein. “Because of their leadership and their service, I’ve had six or seven groups of kids come to me and want to do some service learning projects,” said Dr. Henderson. “Their kindness and their example is spreading throughout our school.“
