Mehlville High School English Language Arts Teacher Kelly Newton and Bernard Middle School Social Studies Teacher Robert Summers were named Outstanding Beginning Teachers by the Missouri Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (MACTE). All recipients must be in their first or second year of teaching and are nominated by their college.
Kelly Newton - Mehlville High School
Newton is in her second year at Mehlville after graduating from St. Louis University.
“Mrs. Newton is a passionate, caring teacher who has created a supportive and inclusive classroom that is conducive to learning,” said Dr. Jason Landherr, Mehlville High School principal. “She encourages students to do their best and makes everyone feel welcome in her classroom.”
Newton’s favorite part of her job is making learning fun for her students.
“Teaching can be difficult and overwhelming, but this recognition reminds me that I am making a difference,” said Newton.
Roberts Summers - Bernard Middle School
Summers is in his first year at Bernard Middle School after graduating from Maryville University.
"Mr. Summers is a passionate educator who has worked diligently this year to support our students in both their academics and sense of belonging here at Bernard,” said Dr. Lauren Cumming, Bernard Middle School principal. “We are grateful for his dedication to our students and his support of our Bernard community.”
In addition to teaching Social Studies and Creative Writing, Summers co-sponsored the first-ever Bernard Talent Show and serves as the co-sponsor for the Bernard Drama Club.
“I love being able to support the educational journey of students in the same district I graduated from,” said Summers. “I could not have asked for a better place to have my first year of teaching.”
