St. Louis County imposed an indoor mask mandate that begins Monday, July 26. As a result, all students, staff and visitors who enter our schools must be masked starting that day. If your child is in Summer Session or attending camps or other on-campus programs, please make sure he or she has an appropriate mask or face covering.
Please see our frequently asked questions about face masks and contact your child’s principal if you have any questions.
Frequently Asked Questions About Masks
What if my child can’t tolerate a mask?
We understand that some children cannot tolerate a face covering due to a medical condition or disability. We encourage parents to contact their school principal or special education teacher to discuss accommodations through your child’s 504B plan or Individualized Education Plan (IEP). If your child has a medical reason that makes mask-wearing a health concern, please send a doctor’s note to your child’s principal.
When will the mask mandate end?
Unfortunately, we don’t know. Mehlville School District will continue to follow county, state and federal guidelines and requirements for schools. The COVID-19 vaccine is our best tool for reducing COVID community spread and the severity of the disease. We strongly encourage families to consider the COVID-19 vaccine for anyone eligible.
Are masks required outside?
No, masks are not required while students and staff are outside. However, students can choose to keep their masks on outside if they would like to.
What types of masks are required?
We require cloth face masks or buffs, or medical-grade masks. All face coverings must fit snugly over the nose and under the chin. Masks with holes or valves are not acceptable.
Are mask breaks built into the day?
Yes, our elementary students will have mask breaks throughout the day. Students can remove their masks during outside recess, outside physical education classes and while eating breakfast, lunch and snacks.
Will masks be required during PE or recess?
Masks will not be required during any outdoor physical education classes. Indoor PE may or may not be masked based on the class’s ability to social distance.
What happens if my child goes to school without a mask?
We request that parents send their child to school with two clean masks each day. However, schools and buses will have a supply of masks and will provide students with a mask if they arrive at the bus stop or at school without one.
Prior to the mandate being issued, we shared a video detailing current COVID-19 metrics in our community.
