First Early College Academy students will graduate high school with an associate degree

Early College AcademyThe first students enrolled in Mehlville School District’s Early College Academy are graduating high school this spring, several with their associate degree already completed.

The Early College Academy allows Mehlville High School and Oakville High School students to take their courses at St. Louis Community College tuition-free. These courses satisfy both high school and college credits.

“I thought it was a really good idea because I’ve been looking for a way to challenge myself academically, and the early college program allowed me to do that,” said Hannah Drzewiecki, Mehlville High School senior. Drzewiecki completed her associate degree coursework in December. “Having the ability to have two years of classes done before I even go to a college was a big reason I was interested.”

Students take the typical entry-level English, math and humanities courses that are required of all college students, and also have the option to take elective courses in their areas of interest.

“If you’re planning on going to a four-year school, it’s definitely something you should consider,” said Drzewiecki. “You get two years paid for and get to go into classes to figure out what you want to do.”

While students enrolled in the Early College Academy take their classes at St. Louis Community College Campuses, they can still be involved in athletics, arts and other clubs at their high school and attend all other high school events.

“I have more time to work and more downtime than I would if I were going to the high school,” said Melisa Vilic, Oakville High School senior. “You have to be able to manage your time and put a lot of effort into studying and homework.”

Students can apply for the Early College Academy after their sophomore year. Ten new students will be accepted into the program for the 2021-2022 school year. Students should speak with their counselor if they’re interested in applying.

- Aryianna Batie (MHS)
- Hannah Drzewiecki (MHS)
- David Genovese (OHS)
