Three schools in Mehlville School District are finalists in inaugural Louie Awards

Mehlville School District is proud to have three schools recognized as finalists in a new public school recognition program. MOSAIC Elementary School, Trautwein Elementary School and Washington Middle School have all been announced as finalists in The Louie Awards.

The Gateway to Success Foundation, an organization with the goal of bringing greater recognition to high performing public and public charter schools in St. Louis, has introduced “The Louies,” an annual awards program. “The Louies” identifies schools that demonstrate the most year-over-year improvement in student performance in math and English language arts (ELA) for grades three to eight. Gateway to Success Foundation has partnered with the PRiME Center at Saint Louis University, the state’s leading education research organization.

The 20 finalist schools, including MOSAIC and Trautwein elementary schools and Washington Middle School, demonstrated the strongest improvement in average student performance over a three-year period from 2022-2025. All three Mehlville schools are finalists for individual student growth in English language arts scores. The Gateway to Success Foundation will announce five winners in both math and English Arts on February 20.

“To strengthen our region, we need to do more to highlight and celebrate success in St. Louis. Public education, in particular, is an area that could use more attention and recognition,” said Mike Dierberg, co-founder of the Gateway to Success Foundation. “The schools being recognized as Louie Finalists and Awardees are raising the bar while pointing the way for other schools to improve student performance. We are excited to shine a light on their success.”

“There are teachers and school leaders in St. Louis who come to work every day with a commitment to experiment and innovate in order to improve student performance,” said Collin Hitt, executive director of the PRiME Center. “This awards program identifies schools that are having the highest impacts on the essential skills of Language Arts and Math and provides us with the opportunity to celebrate accomplishments and share best practices with the education community throughout the region.”
