Mehlville School District students are excelling in Advanced Placement courses and exams

An increasing number of students at Mehlville High School and Oakville High School took Advanced Placement exams during the 2024-2025 school year. Additionally, more students earned scores of 3 or higher, demonstrating their college-level mastery of these rigorous courses.

Last year, a combined 157 Mehlville High School and Oakville High School students were enrolled in at least one AP course, an increase of 24 students from the 2023-2024 school year. Students attempted 229 AP exams, the highest total since the 2021-2022 school year.

Mehlville School District students who took AP exams performed better on average than students in years past. Of the tests taken, almost 80 percent earned a score of 3 or higher in 2024-2025. That’s an increase from 75 percent in 2023-2024 and 64 percent in 2022-2023.

Colleges and universities may provide students with college credit for earning a 3 or higher on an AP exam. The average score for Mehlville School District students was higher than the state average on the exams for 14 different AP courses.

“When students are able to score a 3, 4 or 5 on an Advanced Placement test, it shows that they have mastery of the subject material and provides college credits at most post-secondary institutions,” said Dr. Brian Smith, Assistant Superintendent of Academics. “Taking AP classes also shows college admissions officers that a student is willing to challenge themselves academically and are well equipped for the academic rigor of college.”
