Mehlville Board of Education approves budget

The Mehlville School District Board of Education unanimously approved the budget for the 2026-2027 school year (fiscal year 2027) at its June 25, 2026, meeting.

“Despite some uncertainty in future state funding, Mehlville School District is positioned to continue to provide competitive salaries to our teachers and support staff and to make needed capital improvements to our schools,” said Dr. Jeff Haug, Superintendent of Schools. “We are grateful to our community for their support of our schools and students.”

The district is forecasting $172,566,000 in revenue, down about $3 million from revenue received in fiscal year 2026. Highlights of the fiscal year 2027 budget include:

  • A continued commitment to providing competitive compensation for employees, which aligns with the district’s new strategic plan. Total salaries and benefits have increased by about $5 million in the fiscal year 2027 budget.
  • The funding of recurring capital maintenance items, including bus and roof replacements, in the amount of $2.5 million. This is in alignment with promises made to the community through the passage of Prop A and the district’s strategic plan.
  • Progress on capital improvement projects without incurring debt. These projects were prioritized by community members who participated in the Facilities Steering Committee.
  • The completion of HVAC replacement projects that began in fiscal year 2024. The typical lifespan of HVAC equipment is 20 years. When the Mehlville Board of Education approved the spending plan in 2024, many of the district’s HVAC systems were 20-30 years old. When current projects at Beasley Elementary School, Bierbaum Elementary School and Mehlville High School are completed, all of the district’s HVAC equipment will be about 10 years old or newer.
  • The completion of the final projects funded through Prop S, including the addition of an elevator at MOSAIC Elementary School and restroom upgrades at Mehlville High School and Oakville High School.

The fiscal year 2027 budget, like all school district budgets, is based on several estimates and assumptions. Local and state tax revenue will not be finalized until the fiscal year has started.

The budget forecasts a healthy cash reserve balance of 29.7%. Having sufficient cash reserves helps the district avoid borrowing funds to cover expenses in November before annual local property tax payments start being disbursed to school districts. It also helps the district to avoid budget cuts caused by sudden changes in government funding.

Thanks to the community’s support, Mehlville School District has been able to make wise investments in its schools while maintaining a reputation as a fiscally conservative district. As of May 26, these are Mehlville School District’s ranks out of 22 St. Louis County school districts:

  • The third lowest in tax rate for fiscal year 2026
  • The third lowest in operating expense per student in fiscal year 2025
  • Last in debt per student in fiscal year 2025
