Review shows Prop R funds being spent as promised

The Mehlville Board of Education and administration are keeping their commitment to the promises made when Prop R was passed by voters in 2015. That's the message the Mehlville Finance Committee shared with the Board of Education during its March 14, 2019, meeting.

When Prop R, a 49-cent tax increase, was placed on the ballot in November 2015, the board made several promises about how the additional funds would be spent to improve education for Mehlville's students.

The board promised the estimated $8 million dollar increase in revenue would be used to:
• restore and improve funding for early interventions for struggling students;
• train and retain quality teachers and staff;
• upgrade student and district technology;
• restore, repair and upgrade HVAC systems, roofing and district facilities; and
• fund ongoing operating expenses.

Since the operating tax levy increase passed in 2015, the board has directed the district's finance committee to review and verify Prop R expenditures each year.

During the March 14 Mehlville Board of Education meeting, Mark Hinsen, chair of the Mehlville Finance Committee, reported on the Prop R expenditures made during the 2017-2018 school year.

The committee reviewed $7.6 million of expenditures, or 95 percent of what was spent as a result of Prop R during the 2017-2018 school year, Hinsen said. "We found 100% compliance with all of those expenditures," he said.
