SCOPE
Commonly referred to as “SCOPE,” the South County Consortium is composed of eight area school districts: Affton, Bayless, Hancock Place, Lindbergh, Mehlville, Special School District, Valley Park and Webster Groves. Mehlville School District serves as the fiscal district for the consortium.
The consortium offers four alternative education programs for students who reside within these eight districts.
SCOPE (South County Opportunity for the Purpose of Education)
The SCOPE program serves students in sixth through twelfth grades who have been suspended from their sending school for 5 to 180 days. Students must possess a desire and a willingness to come into the program and work. They must service their suspension successfully. Upon completion, students return to their respective schools with no loss in credit; with improved behavior.
SSLCMS (South St. Louis County Management School)
SSLCMS (South St. Louis County Management School) is suited for students who have been expelled, dropped out of school, are under court supervision, serving long-term suspensions or is also for students who will not return to their respective schools. SSLCMS provides Life Skills Training to assist students in becoming productive citizens in the community. Students attending SSLCMS have the opportunity to earn a diploma or begin employment.
Missouri Option Program
In 2002, the State of Missouri implemented the Missouri Option Program. This state-approved program helps districts reduce their dropout rate. The Missouri Option is for students who are behind at least one year in credits of their cohort group or are in danger of dropping out of school. Students are considered full-time as long as they meet the required criteria of the State. They must be 17 years old, complete certain required academics needed to pass the HiSET test, do community service, be gainfully employed, take all standardized State tests, pass Missouri and U.S. constitution tests and maintain good attendance. Missouri Option Program is NOT an early-out program. When these requirements are met and the HiSET test is passed, the student will receive a high school diploma from their respective schools.
Credit Recovery Program
The Credit Recovery Program is for students who are 16 to 20 years old, have dropped out of school or are on the verge of dropping out, are deficient in credits or are not meeting success in their present educational school setting.
Students enrolled in these programs earn high school credits for their core classes with some electives through the use of academic software programs including A+ Learning Program, SkillsTutor and Contemporary MH McGraw Interactive PreGED. Students have the opportunity to earn the same number of credits as they would at their respective high school.
Enrolling in SCOPE
Students interested in enrolling in one of the four programs must be referred by a counselor or principal from the student’s respective high school. To enroll in one of the programs, each student must attend an intake meeting with their school's counselor, parent and SCOPE principal. Once everyone agrees to the rules and regulations of the program, a contract is signed and the student begins classes on the following day. Parents are responsible for providing transportation to and from school for their students.
