Pam Frederich, school nurse at Oakville High School, received the Outstanding Service of a School Nurse award from the St. Louis Suburban School Nurses Association.

Frederich, who has served as a school nurse for Mehlville School District for more than 20 years, was specifically recognized for her work with diabetic students. Frederich started what’s now known as the Diabetic Corner, when she was a nurse at Oakville Middle School and Wohlwend Elementary School.

“I had 11 diabetic students, so I developed this group for those kids,” Frederich said. In addition to introducing diabetic students to each other for support during the school day, the Diabetic Corner included evening support group meetings for students and their families. The support group meets once a month for members to learn and teach each other about managing diabetes and listen to guest speakers. Many of the club members also participate in Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation fundraisers.

When Frederich transferred to Oakville High School, the club expanded even further, including students from Oakville Middle, Wohlwend and throughout the district and surrounding areas. St. Louis Children’s Hospital, where Frederich once worked, routinely refers kids to Frederich’s Diabetic Corner.

However, it’s not just her work with diabetic students that makes Frederich a wonderful nurse, said Jan Kellerman, principal at Oakville High School.

“Pam is an integral part of my team. I couldn’t survive without her here,” Kellerman said. “She’s good with the kids and the staff. In an emergency she is an absolute level head, and she’s super knowledgeable about the health conditions our students face.”
